Evaluating the Quality of the Curriculum for SEND Pupils (using deep dive methodology)

Target Audience

This course is aimed at primary school SENDCos and senior leaders in mainstream primary schools (including infant and junior schools).

This course will show leaders how to use deep dive methodology to evaluate the quality of education for pupils with SEND in their school.

This is NOT a course that considers the role of the SENDCo and the legal paperwork or legislation required for SEND pupils. Please also note that this is a course for mainstream primary schools. It is not aimed at special schools or schools with a unit where the SEND pupils are taught for much of the time.

Instead it considers what learning is like for these pupils in lessons on a daily basis. It considers how good the curriculum is in reading, writing, mathematics, science and in other foundation subjects for these pupils. It will show delegates how to undertake lesson visits, pupil interviews, work scrutinies and interviews with teachers to evaluate how well the curriculum is meeting the needs of the SEND pupils in the school.

Primary School Course Content

Part 1

  • How to prepare fot the deep dive activities by considering the specific needs of a sample of your pupils.
  • What to look for in lesson visits. How to record your evaluations.
  • Interviewing pupils. What to ask them and how to evaluate what you find out.
  • What to look for in the work scrutiny and how to evaluate and record what you find.
  • What questions to ask teachers about their provision and planning for their SEND pupils and how to evaluate what you find out.

Between part 1 and 2 of the course delegates will use the proformas given out, and use deep dive methodology to record their findings for the SEND pupils in their own school. Delegates will then bring their notes to part 2 of the course and the course will focus on writing the SEND deep dive report and subsequent action plan for SEND pupils.

Part 2

  • Drawing together the evaluations from each of the deep dive activities into a report with the strengths and areas for improvement in the curriculum for SEND pupils.
  • Making recommendations for next steps and subsequent action planning and monitoring.
